Let’s be real, if there is a biblical hell on the Internet, that place would be Twitter. Don’t get me wrong, I love the platform – it’s instant carnage with a pinch of anarchy. Whether it’s laborer Tom arguing about the dangers of vaccines; to Piers Morgan or Robert Reich unleashing their daily dose of diatribe; to Taylor Swift conspiracy theories; or just Kanye, for being Kanye.
But, there are those places on the Twitter, away from all the butchery, away from all the conspiracy theorists, that showcase the bright-side of life. These accounts are by no means nirvana; they are fascinating but without the charades. Here are 10 Twitter accounts that you might find interesting:
Cinematography – Ebru Yıldırım @Ebruyldrm_88
The most visually pleasing tweets for any person that loves movie cinematography. Six to eight scenes from a film, stacked on top and merged into one. The vision just jumps out from the screen and sucks you in.
Science – ESA Webb Telescope @ESA_Webb
This is the official feed for the James Webb Space Telescope. The telescope become operational in June, and is the most powerful ever built, being able to look back further in time to a point just after the Big Bang.
Images – Archillect @archillect
There is no theme or even a plan, rather, Archillect’s images are an explosion of minimal, futuristic, retro, bizarre, voyeuristic, dystopian and whatever else. Many of the images tweeted always linger in the brain, creating a brief escape from whatever’s on your mind.
Hollywood Films – Classic Hollywood (GP) @CHC_1927
Classic Hollywood tweets behind-the-scenes images of the golden age of Hollywood. Whether it’s Audrey Hepburn playing in a fountain in Rome, or Alfred Hitchcock on the set of Rear Window, Classic Hollywood tweets many unseen pictures of a bygone time.
Music – Pitchfork @pitchfork
Much of this list has placed emphasis on lesser-known Twitter accounts that many might not be aware of, but when it comes to music, Pitchfork should be the starting point. The music publication started in 95, where it covered indie rock but today it has branched out to cover all kinds of music.
Sport – Out of Context Football @nocontextfooty
This is solely about ‘taking the piss’ out of all things football, through memes. The tweets are designed for one thing, and that’s to have a laugh. It’s fun when your team is winning, less so, when they are getting smoked.
Rock – Classic Rock in Pics @crockpics
In a time where rock stars drank Jack Daniels instead of Evian water. Similar to Classic Hollywood, this account pays homage to the great music eras and the musicians that shaped the culture of those times.
Architecture and Interior Design – Dezeen @dezeen
Like Pitchfork, dezeen is a magazine. It is however, both the starting, and end point, for anything architecture or interior design related. Dezeen covers it all from gothic, modern, Victorian, and contemporary architecture.
Comedy – Seinfeld @SeinfeldTV
Who doesn’t love the occasional Seinfeld clip of one of the greatest television comedies ever made?
Cricket – Rob Moody @robelinda
Got to love some ‘old school’ cricket highlights. I have no idea where he gets the footage from, but he must have an extensive VHS collection. Either way, watching 1980s clips of a prime Viv Richards and co. launching bowlers into orbit is a bit more enjoyable than reading angry tweets from conservative or progressive commentators.
